History

Learn about the key milestones in the history of the Impact Principles

The Impact Principles were founded in April 2019 by IFC with extensive consultation with industry leaders and 60 founding Signatories. The GIIN became the Host in November 2022.

 

 

GIIN Calls for Standards for Practice

The Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN) publishes “The Roadmap for the Future of Impact Investing,” which presents a vision for more inclusive and sustainable financial markets.
One of the six categories for action specifically called for the establishment of clear principles and standards for impact practice that define what it means to be an impact investor and guard against impact washing.

March 2018

IFC Launches Global Consultation on Draft Impact Principles

The International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector arm of the World Bank, leads a consultation on the draft Operating Principles for Impact Management, developed in collaboration with leading asset managers, asset owners, allocators and development banks, further inviting feedback from stakeholders.

October 2018

The Operating Principles for Impact Management Officially Launch

The Operating Principles for Impact Management are officially launched with 60 founding Signatories, representing more than $350 billion in assets invested for impact. See our news announcement for the launch here.
To coincide with the launch, the IFC publishes “Creating Impact: The Promise of Impact Investing”.

GIIN Becomes Host of the Secretariat

The Global Impact Investing Network agrees to take over as the host of the Secretariat for the Impact Principles in a joint announcement with IFC. 

October 2022

5 Year Anniversary Celebrated in London

The number of Signatories reaches 183 representing over $US 530 billion USD in impact assets.

April 2024

Common & Emerging Practices Resource Series Published

The Impact Principles publish a series of resources, Common and Emerging Practices, which provide an overview of the common, emerging and nascent practices in the implementation of the Impact Principles.
